The Casino Food Co-op joined the Ravenwood Packaging circle of Linerless, installing two Nobac applicators to apply these Linerless Wraps.

The Casino Food Co-op (The Co-op) is Australia’s largest meat processing co-operative, being proudly 100% member owned. Their end-to-end meat processing model includes a sophisticated custom processing operation in Casino, Northern Rivers NSW. This world-class processing facility produces high quality beef and veal products to supply to consumers both within Australia, and in more than 20 markets around the world.
The Co-op packages retail ready meat products which are supplied to major supermarkets across Australia, and within the global marketplace. The convenience of retail ready packaged product has led to a growth in demand and subsequently growth within the Co-op’s production facility. This is evident with the newly developed state-of-the-art retail ready processing facility onsite. Crucial to their continued success was their ability to package product efficiently and appealingly, using flexible formats to suit their broad product range and appeasing global market access requirements for labelling. The challenge is to achieve this all whilst maintaining optimum product performance and shelf life.
The team at The Co-Op first viewed the Ravenwood Packaging Linerless solution at Anuga 2019, the world’s largest food trade show held in Germany. Interested to learn more, the team at Hally Labels then presented the full solution to their engineering team.
The Co-op were looking for an effective and presentable solution for difficult-to-label vacuum-skin packaging (VSP). Prior to introducing the Linerless Wraps labelling option and the Nobac applicators the Co-op utilised standard self-adhesive wraps which were hand applied to individual packs. The hand applied labelling option created many inefficiencies in the production setting and restricted their ability to customise formatting and content in the printable section of the labels.
A Nobac machine was specified to meet their unique needs and custom-built by Ravenwood Packaging. The team at Hally Labels worked closely with The Co-op and Ravenwood to develop custom dielines to suit their tray sizes and formats. We supply faultless Linerless Wraps produced at our Brisbane plant across their range.
The VSP format is rising in popularity offering a form of packaging for retail ready product with a highly desirable presentation and extended shelf-life outcome. The Co-op is able to independently verify shelf life at their on-site NATA accredited testing facility, incorporating the requirements of their Australian and international customers. This labelling solution has proven to be an ideal choice for the Co-op and its customers with premium 360-degree presentation on difficult-to-label product.
The success of the Linerless Wraps solution at The Co-op has led to the installation of a second Nobac applicator. The two Nobac’s sit side-by-side in their new, purpose-designed retail ready processing facility. This offers them the versatility to package both VSP and MAP trays of multiple tray sizes, with both Linerless Wrap and Linerless top label formats. This flexibility is ideal for servicing the needs of their customers in an ever-changing market.
The solution has also provided significant productivity benefits by improving efficiencies overall. The production managers have been able to reduce bottlenecks on the VSP line and produce at a higher capacity; better utilise labour in areas that are more beneficial for the team; and label packs with reliable consistency to meet specification. The team have created ‘recipes’ in the Ravenwood applicator system to ensure the labels are printed on and applied consistently for each SKU which is crucial in a fast paced production setting. This allows the team to more effectively meet and maintain the expectations of their customers.
