United in the love of cheese, Hally Labels worked closely with the team at Talbot Forest Cheese Co. and their packaging design agency On Fire Design, to ensure a successful re-brand and launch of their extensive specialty cheese range.

Challenge


Originating in South Canterbury on the edge of the historic Talbot Forest, Talbot Forest Cheese Co. has been scouring the globe for interesting quality cheeses as well as producing its own delicious creations for over 20 years.  Overtime the brand has created a timeless array of cheeses from those that are soft and creamy, to the more pungent and strong varieties.

With the company’s strong growth ambitions, the decision was made to reposition the brand and a packaging refresh was needed to enable this.  The key drivers were to create a fresh contemporary new label look that better reflected their brand personality and premium cues of the brand’s refresh whilst also caring for the environment. The challenge set was to create a premium label that was suitable for the soft plastics waste recycling stream without having to remove the label from the packaging.

We were invited to join in discussions with both Talbot Forest Cheese Co. and their design agency, Onfire Design, to work to collaboratively towards a fitting label solution.

Solution

Working alongside Talbot Forest Cheese Co. and Onfire Design we were able to incorporate multiple common elements and embellishments to create a premium label range. The packaging includes design features that draw inspiration from the company’s forest origins, colours from nature and imagery of native wildlife, flora, and fauna.

We printed the labels digitally at our Auckland plant, which was the perfect solution for the range which contained multiple variants and die size changes. Digital efficiently enables the regular change out of the cheese style, weight and differing order volumes and is a flexible solution to print ranges like this one. Our HP Indigo digital presses are designed with the environment in mind, with each subsequent press model using less energy and supplies per printed page than its predecessor. We print using HP Indigo Inks which are certified for both home and industrial compostability.

The labels were printed on a premium synthetic material that can be recycled in combination with the cheese packaging via the Soft Plastics Recycling Scheme. Hally Labels are a member of The Packaging Forum and a party to their Soft Plastic Recycling Scheme. It was a pleasure to work with Talbot Forest Cheese Co. to ensure the label delivered on their brief and importantly matched with their specification to achieve soft plastic packaging to maximise recyclability.

The design is accentuated with gold hot foil on both the front and back labels to achieve a premium luxurious effect, fitting the brief. This method of foiling allows us to achieve fine details with a high-quality finish. A common foil block has been used, meaning the same foil design was efficiently placed across all varieties of the label series, maximising the investment. The specialty ‘shield’ label shape means the label seamlessly integrates into the packaging design, enhancing the overall look of the product. The same shape was used across the varieties to create consistency across the brand.

A matt spot textured coating has created a unique gritty, rough feel to the label, giving a visual quality that offers a slightly raised, textured finish. The refreshed range was launched throughout New Zealand supermarkets along with a new website and billboards to promote and build awareness of the new design.


Result

The result is a striking new label range with beautiful packaging that stands out on supermarket shelves and successfully communicates the brands positioning.

A premium look has been achieved with a bold and eye-catching label whilst also meeting the environmental goal of allowing consumers to recycle the packaging for a circular end-of-life solution. 

Performance of the brand has step changed and the new modern label and packaging design along with marketing support and immense sales focus have seen the brand grow in double digits vs same time year ago - +65% dollar sales (source: IRI Scan Sales to Feb 22).
